Today, March 20, we went to see the play "Sin titulo" from the peruvian theatre group Yuyachkani.
The play was about Peru's history, from the war with chile until nowadays.
This play was a really original one. It had a really innovative idea about having the public standing in middle of the stage while the actors performed on moving tables and changing costumes and spaces during the whole play. What made this type of play interesting was how they made you feel like you were inside the play, inside the time they wer representing and not just pat of the audience watching a play. Even as i think about it, i cant see anything that i disliked of this play. Maybe because they have changed it a bit over the years and made it nearly perfect. Could you do an adaptation of another play in this unique form of theatre or is that what makes this play so special?
The lights were very important in this play and very well used as they were used in every way to show important parts of the stage, where to focus on scenes, and also to drag away attention from actors that were changing. The lights are a big factor in this play, as also, apart from pointing to the main scene, they also blacken out the audience, so you dont get distracted by everyone else in the stage.
The costumes in the play were very real, they were really planned and convincing, and they varied a lot. I really felt like it had taken them a enourmous effort to get those costumes. The costumes were easy to define and i liked a lot how they could change of character by changing their clothes, they managed a lot of different characters and scenes with few actors, which i found admiring. But would it be better if actors and actresses had only 1 character and do it better, o they can get to the same level with all the characters they were representing?
What i liked most about the play was the fact that actors didn't speak much, actually they nearly didn't speak at all. But their body movements were extremely clear, and you didnt misunderstood anything, and this allowed you to be able to concentrate more on the details of the play instead of trying to listen to what they were saying. Another bit i really liked was how they started in a still picture around the room and ended the same way.
The scenery, staging and use of space was my favourite in this play. they didnt leave ONE SPOT empty. from the walls all around, to the flag in the roof and the guy int he typewriter on the window. they moved around during the whole play with moving tables and changing in scenes, and it was really, really a well used space in a whole new way of doing it. as they even interacted with the audience. How did they got to decide to use this idea? I dont really know how but we are lucky they did.
They also had a funny part, and a parody of peruvian politics. I found it really entertaining how they showed their hate for political big powers in a real fun way. Although i personally didn't know all the politic powers they were representing, the idea they were trying to transmit got to me really fast.
Quite a good review. Next time, analyze each element more carefully, explain the role they have in the whole play and evaluate the effect that they have on the audience.
